Prof Young has had a career spanning both industry and academia. He has specialised in taking manufacturing process innovation through to exploitation across a wide spectrum of industries.
His current role is as Chief Technology Officer for the Manufacturing Technology Centre. Here he oversees research in fields as diverse as additive manufacturing, electronics, informatics, simulation, laser processing, design for manufacture and intelligent automation. The MTC specialises in maturing manufacturing processes and in helping industry on their journey to being world class. It has already delivered complete world leading production facilities into UK factories.
Since he joined the MTC in 2011 it has grown from 2 people to almost 900 and has become a £110m turnover business. From its origin in the Midlands it now has offices in Liverpool, Oxford and London. It has also launched two apprentice training centres, teaching tomorrows manufacturing technology to over 200 apprentices per year. He is a fellow of the Royal academy of Engineering and of the IET.
